Meghalaya or the 'abode of the cloud' is meant for Gods to live in with its pure atmosphere. Its sweet water and peaceful environment would attract even Gods. It invites you with open arms to spend some time in its lap of nature. Tucked away in the hills of eastern sub-Himalayas Meghalaya is one of the most beautiful states in India. Nature has blessed her with abundant rainfall, sun-shine, virgin forests, high plateaus, tumbling waterfalls, crystal clear rivers, meandering streamlets and above all with sturdy, intelligent and hospitable people.

Shillong, the capital city has a number of beautiful sites like, Ward's Lake, Lady Hydari Park, Polo Ground, Museum, Elephant Falls and the Shillong Peak that overlooks the city golf course. Nature trekking in the hills is an exhilarating experience for all the tourists who love to visit the state. SHILLONG:
The ‘Scotland of the East’ is the capital of Meghalaya, differs from other hill stations of northeast in some ways. Being conveniently motorable in most parts is one of them. A pleasant climate throughout the year is another. Though temperature may sometimes drop to 4 degrees Celsius, days are generally sunny and comfortable. It is at the altitude of 1496 meters above sea level.
From Shillong you can visit Ward’s Lake, popular tourist spots and adjacent to the lake is the Botanical Garden and Botanical Museum. The State Museum which exhibits the anthropological and cultural life of Meghalaya. The Butterfly Museum is worth visiting as it has an excellent collection of these winged beauties, many of which are facing extinction. Shillong Peak is believed to be the adobe of a powerful deity known as “U LEI SHYLLONG”’ meaning Shyllong god. Elephant Falls, lies on the way to Cherrapunjee.
The Don Bosco Centre of Indigenous Cultures, state-of-the-art museum located at Mawlai, Shillong. Must-visit destination for any visitor to the Shillong, it comes as an awe-inspiring experience to discover an anthropological and cultural display of these dimensions in Shillong. A wonderfully visualized, arranged and presented museum with beautiful paintings, craftsmanship and artistic displays that bears the mark of scrupulous planning.

CHERRAPUJEE:
Famous for being the wettest place on earth, it is at distance of 54 km from Shillong was the old capital of the British till­­­­­ 1874. Cherrapujee is impressive with its gushing waterfalls and the deep gorges. You get stunning views of the plains of Bangladesh and close to Cheer town are the glorious Nohkailikai Falls (world’s fourth highest), Nohsngithiang Falls, Dainthlen Falls, and many smaller falls.

MAWSYNRAM:
Mawsynram is currently the wettest place on Earth, with the highest annual rainfall rate. It is also reputed for its stalagmite and stalactite caves.

MAWPHLANG:
A sacred forest with vast floral wealth makes Mawphlang a great attraction for nature lovers. A dense forest where the Lyngdoh (chief) used to offer sacrifices and prayers. It is at distance of 24 km from Shillong.

NARTIANG:
The ancient seat of the Jaintia kings Nartiang still has a number of famous Jaintia stone memorials (monoliths) which have survived the passage of time. The monoliths were erected by the villagers to commemorate the glorious event of the Jaintia Rajas. The tallest (27 ft. high) is said to have been the walking stick of U Mar Phalyngki, the gaint of Jaintia legend. The village is at distance of 65 km from Shillong.

BEST TIME TO VISIT:
From September to April, avoid the monsoons that drench the state from June to September.
